Ukraine has escalated its campaign against Russian shipping, striking hundreds of targets in a matter of weeks as it seeks a new way to pressure Russia’s hold on Crimea, according to Al Jazeera.

The intensified maritime effort comes alongside a broader Ukrainian strategy of targeting Russia’s energy infrastructure. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said his country’s military managed to hit two Russian refineries in targeted attacks, describing the strikes as an effort to hit “Russia’s oil revenues, which it uses to finance the war and the killing of Ukrainians.”

The strikes were reported as Moscow continued its own attacks on Ukrainian cities. At least six people were killed and 36 injured in another round of Russian overnight attacks, according to the Guardian, which said the assaults targeted the eastern city of Balakliia and the northern region of Sumy.

Al Jazeera reported that Ukrainian officials said three people were killed in the Kharkiv region and three in Sumy. Russia, meanwhile, said it had intercepted 605 drones, underscoring the scale of the aerial exchanges between the two sides.

The dual focus on shipping and refineries reflects Ukraine’s attempt to strike at both Russia’s military logistics around Crimea and the revenue streams that sustain its war effort. The campaign against shipping, in particular, targets Moscow’s control over the strategically important peninsula.

The reported casualties and drone interceptions highlight the continued intensity of the conflict, with both sides carrying out strikes deep into contested and occupied territory.
