Iga Swiatek’s early dominance at the US Open evaporated in dramatic fashion as Zheng Qinwen produced a remarkable comeback, according to live coverage from Sky Sports.
Swiatek had raced into a commanding position in the opening set, with Sky Sports reporting she was serving for the set as she looked to establish control of the contest.
But the momentum shifted sharply. Sky Sports reported that Zheng, trailing 5-0, fought back to level and then claim the first set as Swiatek “crumbled” under pressure.
The turnaround did not stop there. Sky Sports’ updates described Zheng moving into a lead by a set and a break, extending her advantage after the extraordinary recovery.
The live blog also noted that other leading players, including Naomi Osaka, Coco Gauff and Alexander Zverev, were in action during the same period of the tournament in New York.
With Zheng ahead by a set and a break, the match had turned firmly in her favour following one of the more striking reversals of the tournament, based on the sequence reported by Sky Sports.
Why it matters
A comeback from 5-0 down against a player of Swiatek's calibre is a rare and notable result at a Grand Slam. It highlights the fine margins at the top of the women's game and could shape the later rounds of the US Open.
