Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said Ukraine “will definitely respond” after an overnight Russian attack that he said killed 10 people, according to a live report by the Guardian published on 18 August 2026.
In a statement, Zelenskyy said: “As of now, 10 people have been reported killed. My condolences to their families and loved ones. Many people have been injured and are receiving all necessary medical care.” He added that first responders had already extinguished the fire and that emergency and response services were continuing to work at the site.
Zelenskyy said the circumstances of the attack were still being established. “We will definitely respond to this Russian strike,” he said, adding that it was “equally important that our partners also complement our just kinetic responses with their own actions to put pressure on Russia and support Ukraine.”
According to the Guardian, Ukraine launched more than 600 drones at Moscow and surrounding areas overnight, underscoring the continued exchange of long-range strikes between the two sides.
Zelenskyy also called for wider international accountability efforts. “I urge all states to join our accountability efforts, including the Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression Against Ukraine, which will soon begin its operations in The Hague,” he said. He described accountability for Russian crimes as “a matter of principle – not only for the victims of Russian attacks, but for the entire international community.”
Why it matters
The exchange of large-scale drone strikes signals a continued escalation in the war between Russia and Ukraine, with civilian casualties reported. Zelenskyy's appeal for allies to add pressure on Russia and back a special tribunal highlights Kyiv's push to keep international support and legal accountability at the center of the conflict.
