Sir Garfield “Garry” Sobers, the former West Indies captain and record-breaking all-rounder, has died at the age of 89, multiple outlets have reported.
Sky Sports and the BBC both confirmed the death of Sobers, who the BBC described as a legendary former West Indies all-rounder “regarded as one of the greatest cricketers of all time.”
According to the Guardian, Sobers was widely regarded as the sport’s greatest all-rounder. His name will forever be associated with a feat he completed in 1968 at Glamorgan’s St Helen’s ground in Swansea, when he became the first batsman to hit six sixes in a single over of six consecutive balls in first-class cricket.
Al Jazeera noted that Sobers, arguably the greatest all-rounder the game has seen, led the West Indies at the peak of his career and broke Test cricket records during his time in the sport.
The Guardian added that while the six-sixes achievement remains among his most celebrated moments, his accomplishments across a long and illustrious career were numerous.
