Hundreds of protesters spent the day blocking the route of a hugely contentious parade in Northern Ireland after a court gave late-night clearance for the Orange Order to march on a historically significant road for the first time in nearly 30 years, according to the Guardian.
The loyalist Drumcree parade along the mainly nationalist Garvaghy Road in Portadown was given the go-ahead by the Parades Commission for the first time since 1998. The decision was denounced by Sinn Féin as “madness”.
Sinn Féin leaders joined those on the streets opposing the decision, the Guardian reported, adding to the significance of a standoff over a march that has long been a flashpoint in the town.
The Garvaghy Road parade has not proceeded since 1998, making the court’s late-night clearance a notable departure from nearly three decades of restrictions on the route.
By the evening, the protesters who had blocked the route dispersed, according to the Guardian, easing the immediate tension on the streets.
Talks were expected on Monday following the day’s events, the Guardian reported.
Why it matters
The Drumcree parade in Portadown has been one of the most contentious flashpoints in Northern Ireland, symbolising deeper tensions between loyalist and nationalist communities.
