The 2026 Solheim Cup got under way at Bernardus Golf in the Netherlands amid a party atmosphere, with Europe and the United States finishing the opening day locked together at 4-4, according to the Guardian’s live coverage.
Play began before a raucous gallery, with Nelly Korda and Allisen Corpuz announced to the crowd before Europe’s Charley Hull and Lottie Woad were introduced to even louder cheers. Corpuz struck the opening shot of the tournament straight down the middle, while Woad, making her Solheim Cup debut, sent a slightly nervous drive into the semi-rough on the 364-yard par-four 1st.
Early exchanges were tight. In the opening match, Europe escaped their troubles on the 1st with a half after Alison Lee left her birdie putt short and Nanna Koerstz Madsen tidied up. The USA hit back on the 2nd, with Korda wedging close on the par five and Woad unable to save the hole with a 15-foot right-to-left putt, leaving the top matches all square.
The foursomes session ended level at 2-2, setting up the afternoon fourballs. Those matches were described as finely poised throughout before the two teams reached parity by the close of play, leaving the contest evenly balanced heading into the rest of the week.
According to the BBC, Carlota Ciganda stole the show late in the day to lift Europe, after the highly anticipated top pairing of Hull and Woad failed to ignite against the United States. The BBC also highlighted Woad and Korda among the best shots of the day.
Highlights of the first day were broadcast by the BBC from the Bernardus course, capping a dramatic opening to the biennial team competition between Europe and the USA.
