Kenya has recorded its first-ever confirmed Ebola case and death, the country’s health minister announced on Tuesday. The patient was a Kenyan citizen who had been living in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and arrived in Nairobi on Saturday, Health Minister Aden Duale told a press conference.
The patient has since died, according to the Guardian. Duale said 28 contacts had been identified so far, including family members and health workers. Kenya’s ministry of health described the case as the country’s first imported Ebola infection.

The case comes as Ebola spreads across the border. According to Al Jazeera, more than 4,000 people have died in what it described as the DR Congo’s worst outbreak, with confirmed cases surpassing 8,300.
The DRC declared its 17th Ebola outbreak in mid-May, the Guardian reported. Ebola is an extremely deadly disease that has killed more than 15,000 people in Africa over the past 50 years.
The Guardian also noted that the virus is surging in a DRC province, underscoring the regional risk as authorities in Kenya work to trace those who came into contact with the patient.
Why it matters
Ebola is a highly lethal disease, and Kenya's first imported case shows how an ongoing outbreak in the DR Congo can cross borders. Rapid contact tracing is critical to containing any further spread in a new country.
