Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian said the country is in a ‘full-scale war’ after the United States expanded its aerial campaign and Tehran struck Washington’s Gulf allies, according to the Guardian. Pezeshkian warned that Iran may have to endure more strikes, even as diplomats said talks to de-escalate the crisis were ongoing.

Iranian media reported strikes around Tabriz, believed to hold underground missile bases, as well as Bushehr, home to the country’s only operational civilian nuclear power plant. State media reported that US strikes hit north and central Iran on Monday.

The US military said it had struck ‘military command centers, air defence and coastal surveillance sites, maritime capabilities, missile and drone launch sites and communications networks.’ CENTCOM said the targeting was intended to further diminish Iran’s ability to attack commercial vessels and civilian mariners transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

Later on Monday, the US military said it had launched its 10th consecutive round of strikes on Iran, aimed at forcing the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. CENTCOM said the US military ‘is holding Iran accountable at the Commander in Chief’s direction.’

The price of oil jumped in early Asian trade on Monday after the latest wave of US strikes and after a vessel caught fire in the Strait of Hormuz. Brent crude for September delivery rose 2.72% to $90.50 a barrel by around 0100 GMT, after briefly crossing $91 — its highest price since June, according to the Guardian.

President Trump said Iran ‘will pay’ for killing soldiers ‘many times over,’ after a number of US military service members were killed in action over the weekend in Jordan. Despite the escalating strikes and rhetoric, diplomats said de-escalation talks were continuing.
