At least seven people have died after a ferry carrying nearly 270 passengers and crew capsized off the coast of Turkish-occupied northern Cyprus on Sunday, local authorities said. The prime minister of the self-declared Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Ünal Üstel, said 237 of the 267 people on board had been rescued.
In a post on X, Üstel described the incident as a “tragic shipwreck” and said search and rescue operations were under way to locate the missing, which he described as the “utmost priority”, according to the Guardian.
Üstel told the state-run TRT news channel that 237 people had been rescued and that a search was continuing for those who remained unaccounted for, the Guardian reported. Al Jazeera similarly cited the prime minister as saying 237 people had been rescued and 23 remained missing.
Casualty and missing-person figures shifted through the day as authorities updated their assessments. Al Jazeera reported at least seven dead and 23 missing, while later Guardian updates cited at least eight dead with figures for the missing given at various points as 17 and 22.
Video footage published by Al Jazeera showed rescue efforts following the capsizing, with officials reporting several dead. The differing numbers reflect the developing nature of the rescue operation rather than confirmed final totals.
Authorities said the search for those unaccounted for remained ongoing. No cause for the capsizing was given in the available reports.
Why it matters
The capsizing is a major maritime disaster affecting hundreds of people in a single incident, underscoring the risks of overloaded or vulnerable passenger vessels. With dozens still missing, the outcome of the rescue operation could determine the final death toll.
