Manchester Super Giants claimed their first men’s Hundred title at Old Trafford, surviving a late wobble to defeat Trent Rockets by five wickets in the final. The Old Trafford-based side, chasing a target of 159, reached 162-5 to secure the trophy at their third attempt, according to the Guardian.

The victory was built on a commanding innings from New Zealand opener Tim Seifert, who scored 72 off just 38 balls. His knock featured a scarily high backlift that produced seven sixes and a half-century off just 23 balls, launching the ball far higher than any of the Rockets’ batters managed during their innings.

Seifert’s performance overshadowed that of teammate Jos Buttler, who the Guardian described as being turned into a support act in the chase. The New Zealander’s demolition job effectively set up the win before a late collapse threatened to complicate matters.

Liam Dawson completed the job for the Super Giants, sealing the win with a six with two balls remaining. The finish capped a chase that had wobbled late but ultimately delivered the title to Manchester.

Trent Rockets had posted 158-8 in their innings, which the Guardian said was defined by useful cameos rather than a single dominant contribution. That total proved insufficient against Seifert’s fireworks and a disciplined Super Giants effort with the ball.

Noor Ahmad sparkled with the ball for the winners, taking three for 33 to help restrict the Rockets. Despite his impressive figures, the Guardian noted this was ultimately Seifert’s night, as the 31-year-old drove Manchester to their maiden men’s Hundred crown.

The Super Giants were once known as the Originals, with their rebranding reflecting what the Guardian described as the tournament’s IPL-ification. The name change coincided with the club finally getting over the line in the men’s competition.
